School Responds to Hurricane Katrina
The
faculty, administration, and students of the University
of Michigan Law School are deeply concerned about the
welfare of those suffering from the impact of Hurricane
Katrina. In an effort to be of some assistance to fellow
members of our legal community who have been so terribly
affected by the dire conditions in the New Orleans area,
we wish to offer space to current law students from
Tulane and Loyola of New Orleans to enroll as visiting
non-degree students for at least the fall semester (with
the need for a second semester to be addressed later
this fall). While we would ideally have room for all
who would come, we know realistically that this will
not be possible. Because we have already received inquiries
from many more students than we are capable of enrolling,
we will give priority to third-year law students and
to those who have connections to the state or the University
of Michigan. We will be conducting an expedited admissions
interview over the telephone for those who have expressed
interest in attending. Following a University-wide policy
(since other schools at the University will take similar
action), we must charge visiting students tuition. Details
concerning remission of tuition either to visiting students
or to their home law school will be worked out later,
but we will operate on the principle that a student
visiting here should end up paying (to whichever institution)
no more than that which they would have paid to their
home school had this tragedy not occurred.

Minority Caucus Colleagues
Minority
Caucus Colleagues,
If
you have contact with law students who had been going
to Tulane or Loyola in New Orleans, before those schools
were devastated by Hurricane Katrina, please pass on
the following message:
This
is from an email I received from my alma mater, Boalt
Hall School of Law at the University of California at
Berkeley:
Boalt
has joined a number of U.S. law schools in stepping
forward to offer assistance by accepting into our community
and our classes a limited number of students from Tulane
and Loyola for the fall semester. "Our response to this
emergency is only 24 hours old and there are a myriad
of details to address but we hope to have these students
arriving at Boalt by mid-September," said Professor
Andrew Guzman, who proposed and is assisting in organizing
our offer to the displaced students. Boalt is also considering
other ways our community may be able to assist the student
visitors, such as with housing, books and other needs.
Professor
Guzman can be reached at (510) 642-8074.
