"A
Greater NBA, A Greater You"
EXECUTIVE
BOARD REITERATES ITS POSITION ON JUDICIAL NOMINATIONS
In its meeting
on September 14, 2002, the Executive Board of the National Bar
Association has restated its position that certain judicial candidates
nominated by President Bush do not meet the standards of the NBA;
accordingly, the NBA has urged the Senate Judiciary Committee
to reject such nominations. Currently pending, is the nomination
of Dennis Shedd to the 4th Circuit of the United States
Court of Appeals. NBA President, Malcolm S. Robinson, has
stated that "The National Bar Association has had the opportunity
to examine Dennis Shedd's positions relative to free access to
the court system in general as well as the preservation of a litigant's
ability to demand a jury trial. We oppose his nomination and urge
all of our members to write to the Senate Judiciary Committee,
Senator Patrick Leahy, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary
Committee (senator_leahy@leahy.senate.gov),
and your elected officials expressing your opposition to that
nomination." The NBA was one of many organizations that were successful
in persuading the Senate Judiciary Committee to reject the nomination
of Priscilla Owens to the 5th Circuit.
