remembrance of Dean Wiley A. Branton, an activist for civil,
social and economic justice, the National Bar Association
hosted its Sixteenth Annual Issues Symposium and Award Luncheon
in Chicago, Illinois at the Drake Hotel, October 20 - 24,
2004. This years topics included: "The Voting Rights Act:
What It Is, What It Was and What It Will Be"; "Voting Rights
and Wrongs: An Examination of Disenfranchisement and Attempts
to Deteriorate the Voting Rights Act" and "Count My Vote!
Election Protection, Voting Litigation and Legislation ."

TWENTY-FIVE
YEARS OF SERVICE, THE HONORABLE JOYCE LONDON ALEXANDER
On
Friday, October 15, 2004, the United States District Court
for the District of Massachusetts will celebrate twenty-five
years of service by the Honorable Joyce London Alexander
who became the first African American woman Magistrate Judge
in the nation’s history when she was sworn in on August
6, 1979. Alexander also became the first African American
Chief United States Magistrate Judge on January 2, 1996
and the first African American woman chief judge of any
court in Massachusetts. The ceremony will highlight the
unveiling of her portrait which will be presented by her
former law clerks. More

CARE ISSUES IN THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY AT CONGRESSIONAL
BLACK CAUCUS BRAINTRUST
Friday,
September 10, 2004- Yesterday, National Bar Association
President Kim M. Keenan participated on a congressional
braintrust of professionals addressing the legal ramifications
of the lack of access to health care within African American
communities. The panel was convened by Congresswoman Sheila
Jackson Lee (D-TX) as part of the 34th Annual Congressional
Black Caucus Legislative Conference held September 8 – 11,
2004 in Washington, D.C. Keenan joined medical professionals
in addressing how African Americans and other minorities
receive substandard care and very little preventative care.

National Bar Association (NBA) Hall of Fame Task Force,
chaired by the Honorable Sharon E. Strickland, is now accepting
nominations for the 2003 NBA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.
The 18th Annual NBA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will
be held on Friday, August 8, 2002, during the NBA's 78th
Annual Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The
NBA Hall of Fame honors lawyers who have been licensed to
practice law for forty years or more, and who have made
significant contributions to the cause of justice.
It
is appropriate to pause and recognize those whose courage,
intellectual accomplishments, professional achievements

APRIL 1, 2003
WASHINGTON
- On April 1, 2003, the United States Supreme Court will
hear oral arguments in Gratz v. Bollinger, 122 F.Supp.
811 (E.D. Mich 200) cert. granted (December 2000) and Grutter
v. Bollinger, 288 F.3d 732 (6th Cir. 2001) cert. granted
(December 2, 2002). These cases deal with affirmative action
in admissions programs at undergraduate and graduate schools.
The NBA is encouraging members to come to Washington, D.C.,
for this historic event. There will be a press conference
and candle light vigil on Monday, March 31st, and we will
participate in a rally on April 1st. More
