BAR ASSOCIATION MOURNS THE LOSS OF ROSA PARKS
Detroit,
Michigan – Detroit, Michigan - The National Bar Association
mourns the loss of Mrs. Rosa Parks, and extends condolences
to her family and friends on her passing. Mother Parks,
as she was affectionately known by those in her adopted
home of Detroit, Michigan, was the matriarch of the modern
civil rights movement. When Rosa Parks refused to give up
her seat to a white man on a public bus in Montgomery, Alabama,
she sparked a peaceful protest that ignited the flames of
liberty and justice for millions of people of color in the
United States and abroad. Within a year of the commencement
of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the United States Supreme
Court struck down segregationist transportation policies
as unconstitutional. As has been said many times: "Rosa
Parks sat down so that we could stand up."

operations, the NBA Hurricane Relief Task Force has been
established to coordinate short and long tern plans to assist
victims of Katrina. NBA Vice Presidents Vanita Banks and

NATIONAL
BAR ASSOCIATION URGES U.S. SENATE TO WITHHOLD CONFIRMATION
OF JUDGE JOHN G. ROBERTS UNTIL SATISFIED NOMINEE WILL PROTECT
EQUAL JUSTICE, CIVIL RIGHTS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES
 |
WASHINGTON,
DC - (9/9/05) The National Bar Association urges the
U.S. Senate to withhold confirmation of Judge John G. Roberts,
Jr. as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court until the
nominee has established unequivocally that he meets high
and exacting standards for this uniquely important post,
including a commitment to civil rights, civil liberties
and equal justice under law. The NBA's review of Judge Roberts'
record thus far reveals evidence of profound racial, gender
and cultural insensitivity, judicial activism, and ideological
extremism, with an agenda to reverse well-settled jurisprudence
on civil rights and liberties, Congressional powers under
the Commerce Clause, privacy, separation of church and state,
and federal jurisdiction. In sum, Judge Roberts' record
raises significant and troubling questions regarding his
qualifications for appointment to the Nation's highest court.

Statement
of National Bar Association President Reginald M. Turner
Regarding the Passing of Chief Justice William Rehnquist
WASHINGTON,
DC - (09/06/2005) The National Bar Association (NBA)
expresses its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues
of the late Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist of the United
States Supreme Court. Chief Justice Rehnquist spoke eloquently
of the need for an independent judiciary to protect the
constitutional values we cherish as a nation. He was also
a strong advocate for adequate resources for the judiciary.
The NBA joined Chief Justice Rehnquist in these efforts
and his leadership will be missed.
