NATIONAL
BAR ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT DELIVERED DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING,
JR. SPEECH
WASHINGTON
- On January 15 National Bar Association President Clyde
E. Bailey, Sr. delivered the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. Memorial Speech at Fort Lee.
Bailey
traveled home to Petersburg, VA to give the
speech before a dinner audience of over 350 people
at the Lee Club on the base of the U.S. Army Combined Arms
Support Command and Fort Lee. Previous speakers have included
Justice Roger Gregory, US Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit
and former Virginia Governor Douglass Wilder.
Bailey
linked this year's theme "Remember! Celebrate! Act! A
Day On, Not a Day Off" with Dr. King's admonition "we cannot
be satisfied" from his "I have a Dream" speech.
He declared that the National Bar Association will never
be satisfied as long as there is, 'police brutality in the
boroughs of New York; health care disparities from the East
Coast to the West Coast; racial profiling on the highways
of New Jersey and Pennsylvania; deliberate infiltration
of drugs in South Central LA; under-funded, under-performing
and re-segregated public schools in all major cities; and
disenfranchised voters in Florida.'
Bailey
also made the case that the United States Military, too
is not satisfied. He credited the military for having made
a compelling business case for diversity in its amicus brief
in support of the University of Michigan by linking diversity
in its officer ranks with its core mission of defending
the nation.
The
National Bar Association, established in 1925, is the oldest
and largest association of lawyers, judges, and law students
of color, with more than 18,000 members worldwide.
