Holds Briefing on Post-Katrina Issues of Election Protection
& Affiliate Mobilization
The
"2006 Election Protection Leadership Briefing & Affiliate
Mobilization" will include the following legal experts:
Barbara
R. Arnwine is the Executive Director of the Lawyers'
Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. She has become renowned
for her work on passage of the landmark Civil Rights Act
of 1991; and in 2001, Ms. Arnwine represented African descendants
from the Americas in helping draft provisions of the program
for action of the UN World Conference Against Racism, Racial
Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance in Durban,
South Africa. In addition, Ms. Arnwine has been a prominent
voice for voting rights during the 2000 and 2004 U.S. Presidential
Elections.
Jonah
H. Goldman is a staff attorney in the Lawyers' Committee's
Voting Rights Project. In addition to his active role in
the Project's litigation docket, Jonah is responsible for
the Project's leadership in the Election Protection Coalition
and for developing policy and strategy to reform the administration
of elections at the federal, state and local level. Before
joining the Lawyers' Committee, Jonah served as the Public
Policy Fellow for the Jewish Council for Public Affairs
(JCPA) in Washington, D.C where he was responsible for the
JCPA's legislative advocacy on a number of social justice
issues including hunger relief, the extension of federal
hate crimes legislation, and opposing the expansion of Charitable
Choice.
Tanya
Clay is the Public Policy Director for People For the
American Way and People For the American Way Foundation
in Washington, DC. People for the American Way is an energetic
advocate for the values and institutions that sustain a
diverse democratic society. The organization was founded
in 1981 by Norman Lear, Barbara Jordan, Father Theodore
Hesburgh, and Andrew Heiskell.
