THOMSON
WEST RECEIVES NBA SANKOFA AWARD
WASHINGTON,
DC - Thomson West (formerly known as West Publishing
Company) received a NBA Sankofa Award during the National
Bar Association (NBA) 80th Annual Convention in Orlando,
Florida. Thomson West President & CEO, Peter Warwick accepting
the NBA Sankofa Award.
Since 1999, Thomson West has been in partnership with the
NBA to support the rule of law through the world. As the
leading provider of integrated legal research, Thomson West
has donated online legal research services to the United
Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the
United National International Criminal Tribunal for the
Former Yugoslavia, and in conjunction with the NBA provided
training to court personnel in those countries. This donation,
valued in the millions, is the largest donation in the history
of the International Criminal Courts.
In
2003, Thomson West renewed the WESTLAW licenses and extended
it to include the United Nations Special Court for Sierra
Leone, and gave permission through the NBA International
Law Section for the United States State Department to translate
its publications titled “International Human Rights Law”
into French for dissemination to presidents, heads of government,
embassies, Non Governmental Organization’s and legal institutions
in countries such as Rwanda and Mali. Through their work
with the NBA International Law Section, Thomson West continues
their commitment throughout Africa and the world.
Thomson
West President & CEO Peter Warwick accepted the Sankofa
Award. Kim M. Keenan, NBA President 2004-2005, stated “We
are very proud of our long-standing partnership with Thomson
West. Together we have achieved the true spirit of the Sankofa
tradition – looking to the past to move forward for the
future.”
The
NBA is the largest and oldest organization of attorneys
and judges of color in the world. The NBA was founded in
1925 and today represents over 18,000 lawyers, judges, educators
and law students.
