National Bar Association Under the Leadership of President Moore, Implements the 2008 Federal Appointments Process Initiative

Washington, DC - Rodney G Moore, President of the National Bar Association (NBA) today took the first steps to implement a process designed to assist in securing Presidential appointments to the Obama administration. The NBA 2008 Federal Appointments Process Initiative (FAPI) will further Moore’s goal of expanding opportunities for attorneys in the public and private sector. Moore stated, “The purpose of the FAPI is to increase diversity in federal appointments by increasing the number of African-American attorneys serving in the new administration. Our pride in the accomplishments of President-Elect Obama will be demonstrated through a commitment of our members to serve the country in the new administration.”

The 2008 FAPI will help enhance the NBA’s influence in the legal and public policy arena. Moore has appointed attorney Bizunesh Scott of the Washington, D.C. law office of Patton Boggs to chair a committee charged with accomplishing FAPI goals (FAPI Committee).

The FAPI Committee will review more than one thousand federal advisory committees and select committees that serve the interests and needs of the NBA membership and the communities it serves.  The committees selected will address issues pertaining to civil rights, economic empowerment, education, and health issues. The list of chosen committees will be posted on the NBA website to enable NBA members to self nominate themselves to be recommended for seats on the committee. The NBA will then forward letters to the committees endorsing NBA members. Additionally, the FAPI Committee will compile information and resumes of NBA members interested in specific appointments to the President-Elect’s administration. The FAPI Committee will then assist these individuals in applying for these positions.

President Moore and other NBA members are committed to participating in meetings with members of the Obama transition team to secure appointments of NBA members. “We are committed to assuring that President-Elect Obama has access to the best and brightest legal minds America has to offer,” said Moore.

On Monday, November 10, 2008, the NBA will launch a new web portal on the NBA homepage (www.NationalBar.org) where members will be able to find out more information regarding the appointments process, the transition team and the transition process, and how the NBA can assist in the appointments process. Also during the next few months, the NBA will host workshops for its members to guide them through the process of application and endorsement.

If you would like more information or would like to be considered to serve on the FAPI Committee, contact Bizunesh Scott at bscott@pattonboggs.com

National Bar Association Congratulates President-Elect Obama

Washington, DC – (November 4, 2008) …..  National Bar Association (NBA) President Rodney G. Moore today extends heartfelt congratulations to Illinois Senator Barack Obama for his victory in today’s Presidential Election.

“I would like to congratulate President-Elect Barack Obama on his election as the next President of the United States. From California to Pennsylvania, and from Ohio to New York, the results leave no question that President-Elect Obama has a mandate for change. America is united that this country must move in a different direction, a positive direction. Senator Obama, in running a campaign based on hope and racial reconciliation, and on economic development and improving our security through international cooperation, appealed to the best in all of us.”

“As President of the National Bar Association, I am honored to pledge the support of our network of over 44,000 lawyers, judges and law professors. We look forward to working with the new administration to assure both the smooth transition of administrations and the fulfillment of the promise of change.”

“This historic achievement by Senator Obama, of being the first African American elected to serve as the President of the United States is a proud moment for the National Bar Association and the United States,"  President Moore stated. "This is even a prouder moment for the National Bar Association, to have a member of the legal community elected to serve as the President of the United States." President-Elect Obama joins the pantheon of lawyers including Thurgood Marshall and Charles Hamilton Houston who have helped this great country to live up to the ideals upon which it was founded.

On behalf of the National Bar membership, President Moore pledged the organization’s full support as President-elect Obama begins to build his administration and engage in the process of governing.  As the nation's first African-American president, Barack Obama is blazing a trail many believed to be unthinkable just a few short years ago.  When he launched his campaign nearly two years ago, he faced daunting odds and a challenge of truly historic proportions.

"President-Elect Obama is to be commended for presiding over a campaign unmatched in discipline and ingenuity, and for restoring a modicum of civility to the democratic process," remarked President Moore.  "His victory is sure to inspire millions and his steady leadership will serve the nation well as we deal with future challenges."

National Bar Association President Rodney G. Moore is an attorney with the Atlanta, GA office of Greenberg Traurig, LLP. The National Bar Association, first organized in 1925, has a network of 44,000 members representing African-American members of the bar who are lawyers, judges, law professors and law students. The organization seeks to advance the science of jurisprudence, preserve the independence of the judiciary and to uphold the honor and integrity of the legal profession.
